A LOOK AT THE AREA OF

Magliano Alfieri

Some archaeological remains found in the area “piana” witness the roman origin of Magliano: since the first century a.C, our countryside saw the area occupation and the allocation of roman cores next to the precedent ones, inhabitants from the “Liguria“ region.

If we get on the main town and we lean out in front of the town hall, the landscape we see is heartbreaking: over the borderline there is a  light blue flash of the Tanaro river and beyond the river, we can see the hills of “Bassa Langa”.

A waste flat area divides the centre of town from the river: it is the ”Gorreti” area, fertile wheat fields, of orchards, of vegetables here and there some residual of mulberry that recall the silkworm raised by almost all the families around 1930’s.

THE LAND AND THE MAN

AN IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIP

The highway separates the flat area of the village from the hilly one: little, sweet reliefs that witness the persistent farming vocation of the area despite the changes occurred in the last years. In spring there a lot of rose and white flowering of fruit trees, the nice orange of the apricot tree in midsummer and in autumn the violet of grapes and saffron.

The shores of Moisa stream which flows down the hill of Bosco, are shaded by horsetails, huisache, elderberries and in the period between June and October the ears of Purple-loosestrife colour with their rose-purple the ditch edges.
A few bushes of Quince tree survive to mark the border among the estates.

Some country chapels escaped the neglect and inclemency and here and there among the cultivate pop up the last huts where the farmer kept the tools, rest in the hot summer afternoons or repaired himself from the sudden storms.

Our rural landscape is also marked by the presence of country pylons often dedicated to countryside patron saints and frequently became in a past, not too far away, rogations’ destination, processions in order to avoid the damages due to bad weather and to propitiate a good harvest.

TO EXPLORE

AT THE FOOT OF THE PATHS

The sources of the Moisa stream, the pylons of Saint Peter and Bosco can be destinations of pleasant walks through dirt roads and paths dotted here and there by shiny gypsum fragments.

The story lovers can instead walk up to “Mulino of Magliano” whose original structure with the barn, the mill and the millstones, the hayloft, the stalls and the house goes back to the first half of 1700.

Therefore, who prefers the river can cross the ”Gorreti” area and reach the Tanaro river that flows under egrets flight of grey herons.

Near the river, coots, moorhens and bee-eaters live in a  pond, the so-called ”Oasi dei canapali”, a protected area rich in marsh vegetation and small wild animals.
